The Faculty of Art and Design changes into the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art!

The Academic Senate of the University of West Bohemia passed the Statute of
the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art (FDA),
former Faculty of Art and Design (FAD),
original Institute of Art and Design (IAD)
on Wednesday 26 April 2014.

It happened ten years after the original IAD was set up by doc. Josef Mištera - intentionally on 1 April, the All Fools Day - so that he could remember the date better and also to be able to pronounce the whole project an All Folls Day joke in case it did not work well. It was not necessary, though. The project of the art faculty worked out completely. Although the situation was not favourable and Czech university education was going through reduction he managed to push accredditation of dozens of study specializations through.

Despite economic depression, Josef Mištera managed to gain a government subsidy to build a new building for the school and so he could give himself a gift on his 55th birthday on 13 December 2010 (to remember the date better) - the laying of the foundation stone of the new building.

The Institute of Art and Design moved to the new building in 2012 and prepared for the last phase of its development - the transformation into an art faculty. This transformation took place in September 2013 when the Faculty of Art and Design became the ninth faculty of the University of West Bohemia. Its Academic Senate was elected at the end of the year and the Senate then elected the first dean - doc. Josef Mištera, the founder of the faculty.

1 April 2014 – on „All Fools Day" and on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of foundation of the Institute of Art and Design the cycle is complete - the faculty announces that it adopts officially the name of Ladislav Sutnar whose inspiring legacy it follows.

The history of the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art in dates:

1 April 2004 – establishing of the Institute of Art and Design of the University of West Bohemia
13 December 2010 - laying of the foundation stone of the new building
18 October 2012 – inauguration of the new building of the Institute of Art and Design
1 September 2013 – transformation of the Institute of Art and Design into the Faculty of Art and Design
7 January 2014 – doc. Josef Mištera, the director of the Institute of Art and Design, elected the dean of the Faculty of Art and Design
26 March 2014 – the Faculty of Art and Design renamed the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art (FDA)
1 April 2014 – fhe faculty issues a press release announcing adoption of the name Ladislav Sutnar into the official name of the faculty

Why is Ladislav Sutnar´s name part of the faculty name?

Ladislav Sutnar in not just a good sounding name for our faculty.
Ladislav Sutnar represents a long list of values shared by the whole academic community. All the values that we as designers and artists recognize are embraced in the name - in the word Sutnar.

The name Sutnar evokes practically all the fields of design and art taught at our faculty.
Anywhere in the world the new name of the faculty gives instantly a lot of information:
about the focus of our school,
about the fields of study availabe at our school,
about values that we share,
about our aims,
about our vision,
about our mission,
about location of the faculty - in Ladislav Sutnar´s hometown.
And ... we are and will always be the only faculty of this name in the world.
