"In the late 1960s, the ingenious Ladislav Sutnar created a children's book mockup. The book was supposed to be called Shapes. It was a beautiful book filled with inspiring images that intended to develop young readers' fantasy, vocabulary of shapes and ability to transform what they saw into simple symbols. As had been the case many times before, Ladislav Sutnar's idea was ahead of its time", begins Mr. Mištera, dean of Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design & Art in the recently launched publication of Shapes 2.
The books "Shapes 1" and "Shapes 2" are the successful results of an in-depth engagement to the spiritual legacy and the many artistic disciplines of Pilsen-born designer and artist Ladislav Sutnar, as well as a collaboration with School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City, USA. "Ladislav Sutnar left a legacy and marked an age in graphic design history that continues to inspire designers today", states Steven Heller of SVA. And indeed, young artists and designers from both art faculties created new artworks that speak the language of Ladislav Sutnar in a contemporary framework. To celebrate our ongoing cross-Atlantic collaboration, Galerie Ladislava Sutnara proudly opens the group exhibition "Shapes" in which curator Jan Van Woensel translates the designed artworks in physical artworks to establish an atmospheric experience that supports the progressive vision of Ladislav Sutnar. The exhibition's opening, on Saturday May 4th, coincides with the Pilsen Liberation Festival.
