about the specialization

Furniture and equipment affects the life that develops within or around it. Can mold the interior, provide comfort and meet needs; In space to be inconspicuous or dominating. Through material, it influences the way a person perceives aesthetic qualities. Design is not only practical and useful, but it also has the ability and power to evoke emotions, to be expressive as a work of art, precise as a well-functioning machine. Modern designers are looking for a sense of production that influences the diversity of approaches in production. Students are led to understand the meaning of design work for man, which contributes to their own profiling in design. They are supported in bold conceptual solutions with possible transitions to art, craft or new technologies. During the semester, they work with materials and get acquainted with manufacturing processing technologies. The assignments are oriented to the design of furniture elements, lighting, smaller utility items - always with regard to the context of the interior and focus of the target groups. Final designs are presented in the form of a prototype or a functional model. A common brainstorming, consultations on shape solutions and material choices, ongoing presentations, individual and collective work in the field of projects and cooperation with manufacturers are a common part of the course. Students acquire a design methodology that leads to effective design and successful product presentation. They learn about psychology of use, learn to understand the relationships between man and the objects he uses.
In the course of study, within the specialization Furniture Design and Interior Design, the student chooses besides the compulsory subjects other selected subjects from the individual compulsory blocks of the study plan - the supplementary block and the selection block. Student will attend lectures on the history of art, theory and history of design, copyright in art, as well as practical subjects: drawing, modeling, ergonomics for design, photography and others, which will support basic teaching .

The entrance aptitude examination usually takes place in the first week of January, consists of two parts and lasts about 4 days. The first part evaluates the level of the candidate’s portfolio submitted (the applicant chooses their portfolio to create the broadest possible information about their artistic range). Based on the assessment of the portfolio, the committee decide which of the candidates proceed further to the second part. preparation for the entrance aptitude examination

If interested, the candidate has the possibility to consult their portfolio with the Head of the selected studio before the admission procedure, after prior arrangement (contact: Ms. K. In preparation for aptitude exams, candidates may undertake, within the paid Lifelong Learning at the FDA, one semester art courses (see www.fdu.zcu.cz, section Lifelong Learning; contact: Mgr. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) or intensive one-week art courses during the annual International Summer School of Art ArtCamp (contact: Mgr. M. When the conditions of the admission procedure and subsequent admission to the FDA have been fulfilled, students who have successfully completed these courses do not have to attend the same courses again and automatically get the respective credits, subject to specified conditions set by the Higher Education Act.

 

final state examination

The Final State Examination (hereinafter referred to as FSE) is carried out in the form of a general discussion according to the specified topics, published on the FDA website − Design of furniture and interior - a set of questions as for product design).

Parts of the Final State Examination:

1. Defense of the practical and theoretical parts of the thesis, which was submitted in advance
2. Exam in the theory and history of the field (specialization)
3. Exam in the History of Art

Part of the state exam is to develop and defend the final thesis, which includes a theoretical part and the student′s own work of art.

  • Light and Space - The aim is to design a light object that is not only a part of the space but also a new space that creates and shapes it.

 

Each student has the opportunity to design and submit to the FDA Director for approval their own individual thesis topic.
